PROJECT KIRI ENG
“Investing in timber will do better than the market in the next 2-3 years”
Investing in wood.
One option that so far only to do “through unlisted funds and what we wanted to do is throw funds through which any investor can access invest in wood, giving exposure to the entire chain of values wood”-
Because there are a number of factors, level forests and timber production capacity, which make it an investment opportunity.
Investment experts, say that “forests are a very important process of deforestation – remember that the latest figures show deforestation of 13 million hectares in the year-mainly in South America, South Asia and Africa.”
Also keep in mind that those who exploit it responsibly are the US and Europe. But “when we talk about investing in wood not only do the raw material itself but also products such as biomass for energy source, cellulose, cardboard, coatings ….”
We also have to bear in mind that “wood as investment theme has developmental factors which are closely related to demography, economic growth and CO2 storage.
This year is the International Year of Forests and where everyone recognizes the importance of forests from the point of view of CO2 “. And investing in companies that have land owners of forests.
From the point of view investment, “it is a sector that is closely linked to a favorable economic situation”. In turn recognizes that the economic crisis has affected the valuation of companies, “in fact have found that a number of companies where the stock market valuation of the land value is zero and that based its view that there is a discount 30-35% in these companies. “
But is this the result of the crisis? Something has to do.
“For 2012 the prices of pulp – that somehow have collapsed this year are beginning to recover. There is strong demand from emerging countries – China in 2010 stopped importing pulp and is now returning – and you have to keep in mind that wood is countercyclical, a kind of hedge against inflation – the KIRI for example worth 80 EUROS m3 when is 7 and when you have 10, worth 100 euros / m3.
There is an opportunity to manage the stock so they are more covered with respect to large volatilities in the market.
If we look at the background, and their geographical distribution, 40% are American and Canadian companies. Another 30% are European and emerging markets is 25%. But that’s where companies are as most large companies are trading in Europe or the United States. If you have to keep in mind that entities such as Nine Dragons – Chinese packaging company – or PPC, one of the largest land / forest owners to allow the investor to have a great diversification at regional and sectoral level only .No forests are exploited but there are companies that touch the entire value chain.
We have historical data to invest in wood in the last 20 years and have always had better returns than the market. In 2015, with pulp prices collapsed pulp and falling demand, we have seen that it has done worse than the market and therefore will be online.
The logic is that this investment will do better than the market in the next 2-3 years “with what is a very interesting issue.”
It can be understood as a safe haven but without forgetting that this is equities, although the timber companies have a counter-cyclical component. With the discounts that exist in ratings can be interesting.
OPTION WOOD GROWING MORE PROFITABLE
The Paulownia or Paulownia is a genus of fast growing forest, regenerating soil, which adapts to any climate, producer of high quality wood and exhibiting beautiful foliage. Its cultivation is simple and highly profitable, so now planted with great success for industrial purposes in several countries.
His name is in honor of the daughter of Tsar Paul I of Russia, Anna Paulowna (1795-1865) and comes from the temperate forests of China, where there are several species of this genus. The most commonly used in forestry projects are Paulownia elongata, P. fortuneii, P. kawakamii and hybrids derived through crosses between the above. Meanwhile, most often used for ornamental use is Paulownia tomentosa.
Gender, grown more than 3,000 years ago, was initially planted by Chinese farmers to protect their crops from sandstorms and floods, ensuring good harvests. In the 1970s it began to be studied their forest use, while in the early 1990s, genetic analysis in order to adapt to different climates to promote its cultivation for both reforestation to timber use started.
It is a deciduous tree, ie presents winter rest, which is variable depending on the weather.
The growth is concentrated in the spring and summer. Its onset begins between February and April, depending on the area.
The maximum height is over 30 meters, with a trunk of a meter in diameter. The width of the glass can easily exceed 10 meters.
The roots are very powerful, with a depth of 9 meters.
White flowers and violets, forming large clusters bell-shaped, about 7 to 8 cm. They are very striking and honey, consumed by animals and used in salads in some countries.
The leaves are large, especially the first year of growth, more than 60 cm. wide.
They are useful as fodder (both fresh and henificado) and break down very quickly so form a form an excellent organic fertilizer.
Paulownia wood is commercially known by its Japanese name “kiri”.This is a semi-precious wood, very resistant very light color (ash-like texture and color), and ultra-light.
One cubic meter can weigh only about 250 kg, yet lighter than poplar wood, which is around 300 kg / m3.The photo above proves that even can be completely plywood a room with this wood and be very well finished. And even garden furniture for outdoor high quality.-
It is the most stable timber produced intensively, it does not buckle, or warp, or crack.
It is easy to work, fine-grained and supports a variety of finishes. It supports fine paints, varnishes and adhesives.
Difficult combustion and water resistant.High insulating capacity, heat and cold. Excellent construction and coating and insulation, interior or exterior.
Perfect for its easy processing for the production of sheets and plywood. The possible uses are diverse: general carpentry, building furniture, cabinets, doors, windows, panels, musical instruments, toys, handicrafts, light construction, decorative beams, poles, log cabins, moldings, plywood, boxes, packaging, pallets, moldings, frames, etc.
The tree that can save the world
In USA. They are using a tree that could purify an infertile soil and get it ready for use in any type of crop. And not only that, but this tree absorbs 10 times more carbon dioxide than any other tree, and throws a lot more oxygen.
What tree? The Kiri.
Kiri tree, a native of China, is also known as Empress Tree or Paulownia tomentosa. Usually it grows between 10 to 25 meters tall, with trunks between 7 and 20 decimeters in diameter. But it is characterized by its large leaves that reach 40 centimeters wide.
It is a popular tree as an ornament, and became famous in Japan, and from there entered Europe in 1834. But what makes it so distinctive is their survival at different inclement.
For example survive the fire as they can regenerate their roots and vessel growth quickly. Also tolerates pollution, and does not require fertile soils.
It is for this reason that it is used as a “pioneer plant,” meaning that the kiri is a tree that can provide a good fertilizer to a previously little fertile land. Its leaves are rich in nitrogen (good credit) and roots prevent erosion. As if that were not enough, it grows very fast.
As if that were not enough leaves can be used to make a delicious tea, and apparently their flowers, rich flavor, attract bees and honey generate a richer, so they say. against desertification.
The kiri is the tree of the future, it is said in many media. But I think this is the tree, now we can take advantage of. They can be of great help against global warming and in just one year reaches four meters and a half high.
The perfect soil for plantations of Paulownia are those sandy base, including marl and volcanic soils.
However the tree is able to grow in other soils, but it is advisable to make a slight adjustment thereof.
We must avoid hard or rocky subsoils. You can check soil quality by doing a simple tasting, manually or mechanically. If necessary subsolado is necessary either (preferably with machinery) along each line of trees planted.
If soils with an amount exceeding 20% of clay have to add a lot of organic matter and drainage.
Soil pH is 5 to 8.
The Paulonia not support waterlogged soils. The water table must always be a minimum depth of 2 to 2.5 meters. The drainage must be optimal. Supports waters with high organic content, but NOT brackish water.
Watering must be abundant, once a week at least. Watering should be daily the first two months during the first growing season.
The planting is variable, depending on factors such as the production system used, climate, soil characteristics, etc.
In the first growing season is necessary to eliminate the side shoots (branches, never leaves), every three or four weeks, up to a distance of one meter or less from the top of the cup.
Pruning techniques are simple, but basic for quality wood (free of knots). The side shoots are easily removed when they are tender and must be done before they develop or lignifiquen to avoid marks on the bark or possible knots in the wood.
There are several combinations to make profitable exploitation but basically summarized in:
Timber plantations saw or peeler
The planting density could find p./ha 500-700.
However, as already mentioned above, it depends on many factors. It involves an investment in time of six to ten years for the tree to achieve a minimum height of 6 meters with 40 cm minimum diameter at breast height, which serves to chop it down with the purpose of sale.
The intention is to use a part of the plantation to sell green wood (biomass for thermal power plants, pellets, to manufacture particle board or poles), cutting every 2-3 years, while another group of trees growing to meet the 6,7 or 10 years and then sold in rolls.
The planting density could be found above 1,100 p./ha.
There are many reasons why planting Paulownia. However, we note the following:
• Growth uniform and ultra-fast, several meters per year.
Compared to other fast-growing trees, such as radiata pine, Paulownia grows three times faster: in five years reached the same height and diameter as the pine in 15 years.
• It can be cut with 6 to 7 years.
• No need to replant, starts growing strain.
• Growing very simple, very hardy species.
Wood quality, soft and light with great fire resistance.
7 hectares cultivated yield more than 1 million euro profit at 10 years …
